LSU Researchers Awarded Patent for Bendable Concrete

BATON ROUGE, LA – A team of researchers in the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction
Management has received a U.S. patent for its creation of an Engineered Cementitious
Composite, or “bendable concrete,” utilizing sugarcane bagasse ash as a key ingredient.
The team includes Marwa Hassan, LSU Construction Management professor; Hassan Noorvand, LSU Construction Management research associate; Tyson Rupnow, associate director of research in the Louisiana Transportation Research Center; Michele Barbato, žŸ of California-Davis Civil and Environmental Engineering professor; and Gabriel Arce, research scientist at the Virginia Transportation Research Council.

Work on the project was funded by Tran-SET, a collaborative partnership between nine major institutions and two community colleges, led by LSU, and established to address the accelerated deterioration of transportation infrastructure through “cutting-edge technologies, novel materials, and innovative construction management processes.” Its members are LSU, Arkansas State žŸ, Baton Rouge Community College, Navajo Technical žŸ, New Mexico State žŸ, Oklahoma State žŸ, Prairie View A&M žŸ, Texas A&M žŸ, žŸ of New Mexico, žŸ of Texas at Arlington, and žŸ of Texas at San Antonio.
Additionally, The Lemoine Company, Quality Concrete, IKON, and the Concrete & Aggregates Association of Louisiana (CAAL) have donated materials, equipment, and labor to the project.
