Research Interests
My research interests focus on cognitive and affective variables in substance use initiation, maintenance, cessation, and relapse. I am primarily interested in self-administration of tobacco/nicotine in a variety of populations. More specifically, my interests include:
- Female endocrinology and self-administration of nicotine. My research includes studies with both pre- and postmenopausal women who smoke.
- Outcome expectancies for tobacco use, including beliefs about appetite and weight control and subclinical eating disorder pathology.
- Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use in adolescents and young adults: predictors of initiation and motivational factors in ongoing use.
- The influence of nicotine on the efficacy of opioid withdrawal medications (agonists and partial agonists). Cessation interventions tailored for individuals with opiate use disorder who smoke.
- Brief motivational enhancement interventions for alcohol and smoking.
Dr. Copeland is currently not taking students.
